Marriage books (indexed), 1898-1984.

The marriage book documents the legal union of man and woman as husband and wife. Before August, 1984, marriage books varied in content and format from county to county and over periods of time. Marriage books created prior to August, 1984 may contain one or more of the following: marriage license, bond, register or return, certificate, and parental permission slip. Many of these records were also maintained as separate series in various counties. Marriage books for 1898-1931 and 1934-1968 also include marriage records for blacks which were maintained separately.

Fayette County was formed by Virginia in 1780 as one of the three original counties of the Kentucky District. It was named for General Lafayette. Lexington is the county seat.
